Home - Setting up Utility Connections

GAS, ELECTRICITY and PHONE

  • The previous tenants should have disconnected utility services on their departure.  If not, contact the landlord or property manager to arrange for them to disconnect the service.
  • To arrange connection, you should contact utility companies three days before you move in. This ensures that services are connected when you arrive.
  • A reconnection fee (approx $65) is on the first bill for a new service.  Check when you call the provider.
  • Shop around to find the provider that best meets your needs and budget. Check out their websites for rates, area coverage and special deals.
  • Some companies offer better rates if you connect to both gas and electricity with them or connect phone, mobile phone and internet together.

GAS and ELECTRICTY PROVIDERS

HOME and MOBILE PHONE CARRIERS

INTERNET PROVIDERS

Not a definitive list, but a listing of the main ISPs.

Quicktips:

  • Not everyone can gain access to broadband so you may be stuck with a dial up account via your telephone.  Broadband is dependent on where you live however, this is not always guaranteed.
  • To check if you are in either area, try an ISP’s website as they usually feature a database where you can search if you’re in an ADSL and/or cable area. (Unfortunately if you don’t, you will not be able to get cable as they have stopped cabling areas.)
  • Make sure you also have the correct modem for ADSL or cable.  Some ISPs (such as TPG) offer new customers free modems as part of a contract.
  • Shop around for broadband internet.
  • Be aware of limits with downloads, as whilst you think you have a great deal, you might find that if you exceed the download limit you will be subject to surcharge.
  • Look for “unlimited” downloads which are usually limited despite the term, but with much more generous limits –e.g. 10gig per month as opposed to 200mb or 500mb.  Remember: everything you use – Instant Messaging, E-mail, downloading via p2p, net surfing or game playing adds up to your download limit.  You want at least 5 gig a month.
  • For pros and cons of each ISP check out www.whirlpool.net.au which feature all ISPs as well as feedback from their customers.
