So what’s the ‘Queer Network’ all about?

The Monash Caulfield Queer Network exists to serve the needs of all non-heterosexual students on campus. Be it organising social events, implementing sexual health campaigns, raising queer visibility or providing referrals or other assistance with regard to sexuality-related issues, the MQN plays an active and important role at Monash Caulfield.

Wanna be added to the database? Just send an e-mail to sexuality@monsucaulfield.org.au  and we’ll keep you informed of all the upcoming news and events! Whether you’d like to get involved, and have some issues or ideas you want to raise, or if you’d just like to be kept in the loop as to what’s going on, we want to hear from you!! If you’d like to meet members, your best bet is to check out the Queer Lounge (and while you’re there, grab some free condoms and pamphlets).

The Free Lounge is located on the 2nd Floor of S block (next to the Esperanto office)

Why a ‘Free Lounge’?

Because our everyday space and culture is full of images representative of and beneficial to the dominant (i.e. heterosexual) groups in society. Queers are under-represented everywhere you look. The Queer Lounge exists in an attempt to redress this imbalance. Queer is an umbrella term that includes people that are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, intersex, curious or do not identify as heterosexual. The Queer Lounge is a queer-only space where queer students can gather, socialise and discuss their lives.

What does the Free Lounge provide?

  • A place for queer students to access information and resources relevant to their experiences and needs – educational or otherwise,
  • A space where queer students can feel safe, comfortable and proud to be themselves,
  • A place to meet other queer students for support, friendship and solidarity,
  • And somewhere for queers to chill out, hang out, study, read, have lunch, have a rest, discuss/plan social events… whatever!

Support Services

For many queer students, feeling comfortable with your sexuality can take time. Reading a book, accessing the net, or talking to someone face to face or over the phone can make things easier. You may not feel ready, or may not need to talk right now. But remember, help is always available.
